Click it up a Notch - I Learned

I learned this week that I don't have to include a face in a portrait. Actually the photo can convey a stronger emotion by not including a face, as all the viewers attention is focused on other details.
I usually stretch and strain to get a shot of my son's face when he's involved in a task instead of finding other viewpoints and focus points to convey a message.
I love shots of children and parents or grandparents holding hands. So I decided to try my hand at a shot like this.  I wanted to contrast my son's small soft hand in my husband large hand. I also love that you can see his wedding ring.

I forgot to include my settings, f/1.8, 1/400, ISO 400, I know I had room to increase my aperture, see my comment below, or decrease my ISO.
Constructive critique welcome.

Click it Up a Notch

So Courtney from Click it up a Notch suggested that I try this in B&W.  I liked it with a warmer B&W. What do you think?

Lovely, and I agree, many of my favorite pics aren't of faces. I think you'll treasure this photo in the future.

Oh, I do love the first one. The DOF is lovely. I would say try sharpening the hands a little more to make them pop (maybe using a high pass filter---if you use Photoshop or Elements).

You have a very lovely blog!!!

Thanks Jenny & Amber!
Amber, I know what you mean the hands are a bit soft. I tried applying sharpening but the lines on my husbands hands became a bit too prominent. I think in hindsight I should have stopped down my aperture a bit (increase the number). I had wiggle room for that although at the time it was one of the last shots and the light was falling fast. I appreciate your comments.

Fantastic photos. So touching. There is such emotion in hand shots and you really did a lovely job in capturing it. I also love that there is a little dirt on your son's hand. :)

Thanks Sarah, I love hand shots too. Yes, that's either dirt or chocolate! We had coffee and our son had an ice-cream just before we went down to the lake one last time before heading home for the day. Hee hee, when I uploaded it I thought I should have cleaned his hands but, that's real life!

LOVE these shot! Little hands are the cutest and what a great idea to focus in on them. Thanks for the idea - I need to go out and snap a few of my daughter's pudgy hands before they're no longer little!

I really like this one and I'm sucker for hand shots too. I love the details you captured in this one - dirty little finger nails (all boy), tiny hands holding just two fingers, and the wedding band. The first one is a stronger image to me since they seem to have more of a connection because of the little boys body language towards his dad. I would love to see this photo in black and white!! Since you shot at f/1.8 the little guys hand starts to become blurry. Maybe try f2.5 next time to see if more of his hand stays in focus!! Great job!! This is definitely a keeper!!
