I Learned - Creative Over-exposure

In Tom Ang's book "Digital Photography Masterclass" he speaks about using over-exposure as a photography technique to produce transparency and delicacy. He features a high key beach scene. I've always been intrigued by the look of it and wanted to try it out.
This week we went to the beach and I took some over-exposed shots on the beach.
I overexposed by +1 enough to put my darks at the mid-tones. I love how it makes the image light and airy.
Settings for both shots f/9, 1/250, ISO 100.

What I learned:
  • I love the over-exposed look for beach shots
  • Back or side lighting worked best
  • The reflections were important
  • I'd love to try again in summer on a crowded beach with bright colours, it was difficult to over-expose the foreground without losing the detail in the background.
Constructive critiques welcome

Sarah! I love this!! I will definitely need to try this next time I got to the beach! Since you asked for critiques I'll critique the first one :O) I love the glowing light coming in from the left and how it is even reflecting off the water on the left. I would probably clone out some of the people. I would choose one set of people to be your focus and clone everyone else out. With all the different sets my eye searches for which one is the strongest subject. I love the way you kept the horizon in the top 3rd. You really nailed the over-exposure of this photo! Thanks for linking up!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for your nice comments. And congrats to you on starting your own 365 project; it can be daunting at times but when you look back at the results, it can be so rewarding. Keep up the good work. I'm following you now so I can see where you go on your journey.

oh my, I absolutely love these shots. Great job! I'll have to try overexposing next time at the beach. I think the effect is really cool.
