So I went with the latter. I've been trying to work on my food photography this month. I bought Plate to Pixel by Helene Dujardin, although I haven't had much time to sit down and read it.
I've been scouring shops for fun props and studying this book and my cookbooks to get a feel for what I like and how to achieve the right look.
Last Friday I made Orange and Almond cakes with Orange syrup. It was for the prompt orange in Ashley Sisk's Scavenger Hunt. So I wanted orange to feature heavily in the photo.
First I went for quite a formal setting with a pretty teacup but I didn't like the feel, I wanted it a bit more rustic. I tried a few combinations, but as I was cleaning up with five minutes till I had to leave to pick my son up from school I poured the syrup into a jar and my idea clicked into place, I rearranged my props, shot a couple of shots and this was my favourite.
And gosh they were yummy!

Food is an upcoming theme for the scavenger hunt - this is great inspiration.
Orange is one of my favourite colours anyway, so this is lovely. I would like to of seen more of that patterned cloth for some reason...
But in terms of food photography.. it looks very appetising which i guess is the whole point right? ;-)
This is lovely. I like the orange against the more muted tones.
You are making me hungry! :)

I love this. I rarely photograph food anymore. So much of what makes a good food photo is in how you set up and the little seemingly little details. I love how this all comes together in your shot. Beautiful :)
I really like this, I'd really love to do food photography but I think the lighting is very difficult.
You have done a good job with this shot though. And those biscuits look delicious :))
Wish I could grab one through my computer! So yummy looking.....and that jar of honey!!!!! Oh My!!!
Delicious! :-D
You arranged this beautifully and I love your props. Really great photo! I'd love to get better at food photography.
Beautiful! I really like the composition of the photo.
That is a super book! The natural feel and unique composition in this piece is perfect!
I would have gone without the patternd cloth. It seems to take the attention away from the jar and the orange in first instance.Did you try any like that?
